NWP Coal Canada Ltd. plans to limit selenium directly at the source at the Crown Mountain Coking Coal Project.

The company has turned its attention towards a mining technique called source control as a way of reducing selenium output, in order to accommodate future government regulations that will require stricter effluent quality standards from mines. Source control methods prevent selenium from leaching out of rock, as opposed to older mining methods, which only treat water for selenium once it has already entered the environment.
