Born in England in 1925, Ron immigrated to Canada at a young age with his family and settled in the small coal mining town of Michel, BC. There he grew up struggling through the Great Depression until WWII came around.
Eager for adventure he joined the navy to become a mountain boy on the seven seas. As part of his service, he participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy which would earn him the French Legion of Honour many years later (pictured).
Upon his return home he worked in the mines and eventually settled in Fernie where he would spend the next 60 years in the same house on 4th Ave. It was here that he married his wife of 40 years, Inez, and raised their daughter, Lori.
His heart was always in the Rockies, and he loved nothing more than romping with friends and family through the Elk Valley and beyond; hunting, fishing, and exploring.
Later in life he moved out to the coast to be closer to his family where he passed away surrounded by loved ones on June 26th. He will always be remembered for his willingness to lend a helping hand, for being a favourite with all children, and for his many amazing stories and songs. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law (Bob) who are grateful for all he has done to love and support them; three grandchildren (Brittany, Tristan, Chelsea) who miss their papa very much; his sister (Ada) who always looked up to her older brother; and many nieces and nephews who all have fond memories of adventures with Uncle Ron.
In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the Fernie Legion.
